HONOURS

Honours exist to enable our country to recognize and celebrate OUTSTANDING achievement. They are awarded in the name of His Majesty The King and are announced twice a year (in January and June). A vast majority of them are given to people who make a positive difference to their community.

BUT everyone who receives an honour needs another person to put their name forward, knows about the difference they are making and can explain why they deserve an honour.

If you know someone who you think should be recognised for the contribution they have made then below has more information about honours and explains HOW you can suggest someone as well as giving information about how we can help and support you with this.

The Lord-Lieutenant and dais party, HM The Queen's Jubilee Celebrations in Chester

Why do people receive an Honour?

They are given to people who:

  • Have made a SIGNIFICANT difference to their community through their own contribution
  • Are the very best examples of voluntary service given over a number of years
  • Have changed things for the better – especially for those less able – and who may have overcome obstacles and challenges to do so
  • Have demonstrated innovation or entrepreneurship
  • Have displayed moral courage
  • Have brought distinction to British life and enhanced its reputation.

Who is Eligible to receive an Honour?

  • There is no upper or lower age limit
  • It can for voluntary or paid work
  • Usually they will have been doing the work for at least three years and MUST still be in the role or have stepped-down no more than a year ago

How can you put someone forward for an Honour?

  • Anyone who receives an honour needs a nominator to tell their story
  • Anyone can nominate someone (apart from themselves) BUT please you mustn’t tell them – the whole process is CONFIDENTIAL
  • You need to fill out a nomination form saying what they have done, why they are so special and what their impact has been
  • You need to get two letters of support from other people who know them well and can add something different to your story.

HOW do you access the form and HOW can you get help?

  • More information is available below under the ‘Helping You’ section
  • You can access a mentor through the Cheshire Lieutenancy Officer Robin Roberts on roroberts34@gmail.com
  • An on-line nomination form can be found at gov.uk/honours
  • Or you can contact the Cabinet Office directly on 020 7276 2777 and they can talk you through the process or send you a paper version of the nomination form.
The British Empire Medal

Who decides who receives an honour?

  • There are always fewer honours than people who deserve them and so it is a competitive process
  • The information you provide is checked and feedback gained from those who know the nominee or the area they are working in
  • There are ten independent specialist honours committees who cover the full range of activities. These independent experts recommend those who most deserve an honour and which one they should receive
  • A central committee looks again and prepares a final list for the Prime Minister
  • This list is submitted to His Majesty the King for his approval.

It can take about 18 months for a successful nomination to be included in an Honours List – SO DON’T DELAY.

What Honours are there?

Awarded for very ‘hand-on’ service to the community in a local area of Cheshire.

Recognizing an achievement or service to the community which has delivered sustained impact and which stands out as an example to others.

For those who have performed a distinguished North West or Cheshire wide role in any field.

Rewarding a prominent National or North West role.

For those who have made a pre-eminent contribution in any field, usually at National level.

If you know someone who you think deserves an honour PLEASE NOMINATE them and help us to ensure that people making a difference in Cheshire are recognised.
